eBay Warns Users to Change Passwords after Security Breach

If you have an account on eBay.com, change your password.

eBay Inc. is notifying its users to change their password after determining hackers gained access to a database containing users’ personal information.

“Cyberattackers compromised a small number of employee log-in credentials, allowing unauthorized access to eBay’s corporate network,” eBay said in a release. “Working with law enforcement and leading security experts, the company is aggressively investigating the matter and applying the best forensics tools and practices to protect customers.”

The database contained eBay users’ names, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth. Hackers did not access financial information.

The tech news website Inferse reports that 145 million eBay accounts are compromised.

eBay became aware of the security breach about 2 weeks ago and determined the attack occurred between late February and early March 2014.

The company said there was no evidence that hackers accessed personal or financial information for users of the payment processor PayPal, a subsidiary of eBay. That data resides on a separate secure network with financial data encrypted.

Users of eBay are also encouraged to change passwords on any other sites where they utilized the same password. While using the same password repeatedly may make it easier to remember, people should never use the same password for accounts across multiple sites.
