Recall of 1.3 Million Kidde Smoke Alarms

Consumers should check their smoke alarms because there has been a recall issued for more than a million Kidde brand smoke, and combination smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms that may fail to warn of dangerous conditions.

Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Inc., of Mebane, N.C. is recalling three models of hard-wired smoke and smoke/carbon monoxide combination alarms because they may fail to alert consumers of a fire or harmful carbon monoxide levels during a power outage. The manufacturer is replacing the recalled alarms at no cost to the consumer.

“While power remains out, an affected device will sound if it receives a signal from an alarm in the same interconnected system,” the manufacturer website said. “Once power is restored, an affected device will sound an alarm regardless of the presence of smoke and/or carbon monoxide.”

All three models of smoke alarms are round, white in color and have the Kidde logo engraved on the front. Consumers can find the model number and manufacture date on the back of the alarm. All are hard-wired. The il2010S and il2010SCO come with sealed 10-year backup batteries inside, while the KN-COSM-IBA model has a compartment on the front for installation of replaceable AA backup batteries.

The following Kidde smoke alarms are recalled:

Model Alarm Style Manufacture Date
i12010S Kidde hardwired smoke alarm December 18, 2013 – May 13, 2014
i12010SCO Kidde hardwired combination smoke/CO alarm December 30, 2013 – May 13, 2014

Kidde has set up a Kidde alarm recall website to help consumers determine if their alarm is affected by the recall and for consumers to register online for a replacement.

The manufacturer sold these smoke alarms to consumers, builders and contractors for between $30 and $50 through Shopkidde.com, as well as various retailers including CED, City Electric Supply, HD Supply, Home Depot, Menards Inc., electrical distributors and online at Amazon.com between January 2014 and July 2014. They may have been installed in residential homes or businesses.

This Kidde smoke alarm recall covers about 1.2 million smoke alarms in the United States and another 112,000 in Canada.

Consumers who determine their alarm is recalled should contact Kidde immediately at (844) 553-9011 or through the Kidde recall website at kidde.inmar-recalls.com for a replacement, but continue to use the recalled device until they install the replacement alarm.
