Kids Day at the Gatlinburg Farmers Market offers Fun and Learning

The Gatlinburg Farmers Market will hold its second in a series of Kids Days on Saturday June 27, 2015 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Covered Bridge in the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community.

Scheduled for the day are several activities: The Girl Scouts – Smoky Shadows Troop will demonstrate and help kids make “seed bombs” to take home and plant in their garden or yard. A master forger from the Iron Mountain Metal Craft blacksmith shop will show traditional techniques of this craft while using clay and other items to teach the fundamental motions used during the forging of metal. Kids get to join in the fun of hammering and crafting in this style. In addition, a fun market-wide treasure hunt will have kids searching for clues throughout the market area and at vendor booths, while learning about agriculture and the hand crafting items.

“Families are invited to join us for some fun and games while learning about the merits of shopping for home-grown food and locally-made crafts. The activities have an educational twist that give kids an idea of where food comes from and how it is grown while also learning about nature and metal crafting,” says Nancy Gray, vice president of the Gatlinburg Farmers Market.

The Gatlinburg Farmers Market is held every Saturday through Oct 17, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Covered Bridge in the Arts and Crafts Community, 849 Glades Road in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Kids Days are held every fourth Saturday of the month. Vendors will be on site to provide fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, honey, prepared foods, baked goods, artisanal products, and arts and crafts demonstrations. EBT/SNAP is accepted.
