AquaRug Sold to Prevent Slip and Falls, Recalled Due to Slip and Falls

The AquaRug, an As Seen On TV sensation, is being recalled after reports of falls and injuries related to use of the product.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Tristar Products is recalling 1.4 million AquaRug products in the United States because the four suction cups on the underside of the rug can fail to prevent slipping, posing a fall hazard to the user.

The AquaRug is a loofah-type rug, “designed to stay in place” with four suction cups that provide a slip-resistant surface in the shower or bathtub.

However, there have been 60 reports of people who fell in the shower or bathtub while standing on their AquaRug. 30 of those cases resulted in injuries such as bruises, cuts, and fractured or broken bones.

Consumers may have purchased the AquaRug through television commercials or QVC; online retailers Amazon.com or BuyAquaRug.com; or in Bed Bath & Beyond, Dollar General or other retail stores nationwide between July 2012 and September 2015.

The rugs were sold in beige and clear, and in two sizes: 29.5 inches by 17.25 inches for use in the bathtub, and 21.75 inches by 19.75 inches for use in a shower. The rugs have a plastic border and only four plastic suction cups, one affixed to the underside of each corner of the rug. Aqua Rug models with more than four suction cups are NOT included in the recall.

Consumers should immediately stop using any recalled AquaRug and contact Tristar Products for instructions on how to dispose of the rug and to obtain a free replacement rug. The replacement rug has additional suction cups.
