Health Department Plans Low Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinics

Residents can get a rabies vaccination for their dog or cat for just $10 this month.

The Sevier County Health Department will offer eight rabies vaccination clinics this month. Tennessee state law requires pet owners to vaccinate all dogs and cats over three months of age for rabies. Pets must be brought to the clinic in a carrier or on a leash. Cost is $10 per pet vaccination. For information, call (865) 453-2787.

This year as of April 23, 2016, there have been 22 cases of rabies in Tennessee, including one cat, four dogs, two raccoons and fifteen skunks. The recent rabies deaths in pets prompted state health officials to issue a statement urging pet owners to ensure their pets’ rabies vaccination is current.

“The deaths of these animals serve as a somber reminder of the importance of rabies vaccination,” said TDH Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH. “Our pets are more likely to come into contact with wild animals than people are. Keeping our pets’ rabies vaccinations up to date is an effective and important way to protect both them and our human loved ones.”

Independent from the Sevier County Health Department, rabies vaccination is also available from veterinarians and at vaccination clinics held at PetSense and Tractor Supply in Sevierville. Prices vary.
