Paving Operations Begin on Newfound Gap Road in Smokies

Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced temporary, one-lane closures on Newfound Gap Road for 1.8 miles of roadway between Sugarlands Visitor Center and Carlos Campbell Overlook beginning Tuesday, May 31, 2016 for paving operations. The one-lane closures will be managed with flagging operations directing traffic through the work zones.

Charles Blalock and Sons of Sevierville will pave the road under a contract managed by Estes Brothers Construction of Jonesville, Va. The paving work is expected to take two days to complete, followed by road shouldering and striping operations. Work schedules may be revised if rainy weather occurs. The entire project should be complete by June 15.

Park motorists should expect weekday, single-lane closures and traffic delays throughout the project. Contractors may work during the evening and nighttime hours. For more information about road conditions, please follow at SmokiesRoadsNPS or visit the park website at www.nps.gov/grsm.
