Sevier County High School Student Awarded Memorial Scholarship

A Sevier County High School graduating senior has been awarded the Terry L. Cureton Memorial Scholarship from the Sevierville Police Department. The student, 18-year old Steven Ownby of Sevierville, plans to attend Walters State Community College.

Officer Terry L. Cureton began his law enforcement career in 1982 working various assignments including criminal investigation. Terry joined the Sevierville Police Department in 1988 where he worked for two years prior to being assigned as a special agent to the Fourth Judicial Drug Task Force.

On March 24, 1991, at the age of 33, Terry’s life was cut short in a tragic motorcycle accident. The members of the Sevierville Police Department established the Terry L. Cureton Memorial Scholarship, funded solely by employee contributions, to honor his memory and commitment to serving and protecting our citizens.

Steven is the son of Don and Kathy Ownby. Steven’s ambition is to work as a law enforcement officer or game warden. The $500 scholarship will be used to purchase books and supplies while pursuing a Criminal Justice degree at Walters State Community College.
