Five spirits produced by Old Forge Distillery, including a chocolate moonshine, won awards recently at the world’s largest consumer tasting competition.
Old Forge Distillery’s 1830 Original Chocolate Moonshine, a 60-proof chocolate-flavored moonshine inspired by homemade desserts made at the Old Mill Candy Kitchen and Pottery House Café, and its Old Forge Reserve Bourbon, an eight-year-old whiskey aged in charred white oak barrel and hand selected by Head Distiller Keener Shanton, were both awarded Platinum SIP Awards by a panel of consumer judges.
The Distillery also took home Silver awards for each of its 1830 Original Unaged Corn Moonshine and Old Forge Rum, and Bronze for its 1830 Original Distiller’s Blend Moonshine.
The 8th Annual SIP Awards, an international consumer spirit tasting and judging competition, was held at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Hotel in May. 462 international brands competed in 59 categories in a double blind tasting by a 98-member Consumer Judging Panel.
“Our 1830 Original Miller’s Blend and Coffee Moonshine won Platinum at last year’s competition so we were thrilled to have the streak continue,” said Shanton. “As we venture outside of the moonshine category, it’s rewarding to see all of our spirits receive recognition.”
Old Forge Distillery spirits are available at its distillery retail store, 170 Old Mill Ave. in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and in select Knoxville and Chattanooga area liquor stores.

.75 oz Old Forge Chocolate Moonshine
.75 oz Old Forge Coffee Moonshine
.75 oz Old Forge Unaged Moonshine
.5 oz simple syrup
1 oz cream
Garnish: whipped cream, chocolate syrup, Maraschino cherry
Stir together Old Forge Chocolate Moonshine, Coffee Moonshine, Unaged Moonshine, simple syrup, cream, and 1 cup ice. (Or process in blender.) Pour into chilled glass; garnish with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and Maraschino cherry.
GERMAN CHOCOLATE COCKTAIL
2 oz Old Forge Chocolate Moonshine
3/4 oz ginger syrup
1/2 oz apple schnapps (not sour apple)
Garnish: pinch of salt
Stir ingredients well over ice. Pour into a chilled glass and garnish.
SALTED CARAMEL LATTE
- Steam 2 oz milk.
- Add equal parts coffee moonshine and chocolate moonshine.
- Top with coffee, whipped cream, caramel sauce and a pinch of rock salt
