“Planning for Life After High School” to Help Students with Disabilities Transition

There is something exciting happening in East Tennessee for students and young adults with disabilities, their parents, teachers and the professionals who support them!

STEP (Support & Training for Exceptional Parents) along with the Tennessee Department of Education, Division of Special Populations will host a special education transition event titled “Planning for Life After High School” on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016 from 5 – 9 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 from 8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville. Guests are welcome to register for one or both sessions.

This FREE event is open to the public and targets students and young adults with disabilities, their families and service providers. Attendees will learn about the adult services and issues related to transitioning out of high school and into the community to lead productive and independent adult lives. Participants will find answers to their questions, make connections, and receive tools to use that will help ensure that their children who need access to special education and exit high school be prepared to live, work, and participate fully in their communities.

Thursday will feature a session on preparing for life after high school with options on education, employment and independent living, a panel discussion with state agencies and professionals to answer your questions, an exhibitor fair with disability organizations and other professionals followed by an informal discussion with our panelist.

On Friday we welcome area high school students along with teachers, parents and service providers. Our keynote address will feature a success story on employment followed by informational sessions on options for training, college after high school, fun tools for finding your voice, planning your future, and how to be your own advocate with self-advocacy training, an exhibitor fair with disability organizations and other professionals and a light lunch for attendees.

Deadline for registration is Friday, Oct. 14 in order for lunch to be provided. Make your reservation today by visiting www.tnstep.org or calling 1-800-280-7837.
