Sabra Hummus Pulled from Shelves Nationwide in Massive Hummus Recall

Concerns over possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes prompted Sabra Dipping Company to recall nearly all of its hummus products distributed across the U.S. and Canada.

Sabra issued the hummus recall on Nov. 19, 2016 after routine testing revealed Listeria at Sabra’s manufacturing facility, but it was not found in tested finished products. Only products manufactured prior to November 8 are affected and the company said it implemented sanitation procedures to correct the problem.

“Our first concern is always the health and safety of the people who enjoy our products, so out of an abundance of caution we have issued this recall,” the company said in a statement.

People that eat foods contaminated with Listeria may develop Listeriosis, a serious infection that can be particularly dangerous for older adults, young children, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.

Consumers can identify the recalled hummus using the list below and finding the “Best Before” date on the lid of the package. Recalled hummus will have a date up through January 23, 2017. The company urges consumers to discard affected products.

Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole and Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips are not included in the hummus recall.

The company previously recalled about 30,000 cases of its classic hummus in April 2015 after a routine, random sampling of a product on retail shelves tested positive for Listeria.

“We have invested heavily in technology and enhancing our processes and protocols, with guidance and input from external experts, to develop and put in place industry-leading food safety procedures, such as testing finished product from the production line every two minutes for pathogens including listeria,” said Shali Shalit Shoval, CEO of Sabra Dipping Company. “We want to reassure our consumers that our procedures include extensive finished product testing, and no products tested positive for contaminants. We are taking action because consumer safety is a top priority.”
