Get Ready to Shop as Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday Begins Friday

If you are looking for a new computer, clothing, art or school supplies, save the tax on your purchase during Tennessee’s Sales Tax Holiday this weekend.

The Sales Tax Holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 28 and ends Sunday, July 30, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. Shoppers may purchase qualifying items in person from local retailers or by mail, phone, email or online. While the event is popular for back to school shopping, everyone buying qualifying tax-exempt items will save the tax amount.

What is tax-exempt during the Sales Tax Holiday?

  • Clothing that costs $100 or less per item, including shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, shoes and boots, socks and underwear, coats, sportswear, lingerie, bathing suits, pajamas, gloves, hats, diapers, and uniforms.
  • School Supplies that cost $100 or less per item, including textbooks, binders and folders, backpacks and book bags, paper and notebooks, pens and pencils, markers, crayons, tape, erasers, glue, poster board, rulers, calculators, and scissors.
  • Art Supplies that cost $100 or less per item, including drawing pads, paints and art paintbrushes, clay, and glazes.
  • Computers that cost $1,500 or less, including laptops, desktops and tablets.

Items for business or trade use are not tax-exempt.

Qualified items sold to purchasers by mail, phone, email, or internet will qualify for the sales tax exemption if the buyer orders and pays for the item and the retailer accepts the order during the sales tax holiday period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period.
