1.6 Million Fluorescent Light Fixtures Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

Risk of fire has prompted the recall of certain Metalux, Portfolio and Utilitech brand fluorescent light fixtures manufactured by Eaton’s Cooper Lighting.

Cooper Lighting LLC of Peachtree City, Ga. has issued a recall of several models of retail fluorescent light fixtures after receiving seven reports of sockets overheating, melting or arcing, which poses a fire hazard. The fixtures are white in color and range from 18 inches to 4 feet long, hold one or two lamps, and have either a decorative cover or exposed bulbs. The recall affects about 1.6 million units in the United States and another 27,000 units in Canada.

According to Cooper Lighting, a consumer may fail to fully seat the lamp into the socket. If there is insufficient contact between the lamp terminal and the socket contact, the fixture could arc under certain conditions. The plastic in the sockets could overheat and melt if there is enough electrical energy present.

Cooper Lighting will replace the recalled Metalux, Portfolio and Utilitech fluorescent light fixtures for free.

Consumers can identify recalled Metalux, Portfolio and Utilitech brand fluorescent light fixtures by their DATE CODE and CATALOGUE AND MODEL NUMBER. The Catalogue and Model Number label is located on the inside of the fixture. A date code label is affixed to the fixture near the ballast. Dates appear in a DDD YY format. Only residential T8 fluorescent light fixtures with the Catalogue and Model Number below and a Date Code between 182 11 (July 1, 2011) and 090 15 (March 31, 2015) are included in the recall. Consumers may have purchased these Metalux, Portfolio and Utilitech brand light fixtures for between $13 and $67 at Ace Hardware, Lowe’s, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, True Value and other retail stores nationwide and online from July 2011 through April 2015.

Cooper Lighting is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled fluorescent light fixtures and call (866) 461-7819 or visit the recall website for a free replacement.
