Indiana Woman Dies in Single-Car Accident on Clingmans Dome Road

An Indiana woman died in a single-car accident on Clingmans Dome Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Wednesday.

Park rangers, including the park’s technical Search and Rescue Team, along with Cherokee Tribal EMS and Cherokee Fire and Rescue, responded to the scene of a reported motor vehicle accident approximately 2 miles west of Newfound Gap on Clingmans Dome Road at about 10:43 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2018.

Responders found a 2009 Honda Fit driven by a 55-year-old woman from Indiana had left the roadway and plunged 40 feet below, landing upside down.

The Swain County Medical Examiner also responded to the scene. The woman, whose name was not released, was the only occupant in the vehicle and died as a result of her injuries.
