Sevier County Humane Society Aids Animal Shelters Evacuated for Florence

An animal rescue bus with 52 dogs and 10 cats from three North Carolina animal shelters evacuated for Hurricane Florence arrived in Tennessee Saturday and the Sevier County Humane Society was on hand to assist with rescue and placement efforts.

“We have taken in 9 dogs and 4 cats that will be assessed, have an opportunity to de-stress from the evacuation and transport, and then they will be available for adoption,” said Michaela Sorey, Humane Society Shelter Director. “We believe this is the beginning for these pets. Volunteers and rescue groups from other communities are also helping to get evacuated pets out of harm’s way and into shelters. The Humane Society wants to show our neighbors the Volunteer Spirit and help these homeless dogs and cats.”

Humane Society officials are asking for the public’s assistance by donating financially for the resources to care for the animal evacuees, including food, shelter and veterinary care.

Anyone who is considering adding a pet to the family, please think adoption first. When you adopt, you give a homeless pet a second chance at life and make space available for another dog or cat in the shelter.

“Sevier County remembers the outpouring of support from our neighbors to the east after the wildfires and now it is our opportunity to help them and the homeless pets from their communities in return,” says Sorey.

The Sevier County Humane Society was founded in 1974 as the first animal shelter in Sevier County. It is a private, 501c.3 organization governed by a volunteer board of directors operating on community support and contributions.
