Public Invited to Sevier County’s 225th Anniversary Celebration Event

Sevier County is celebrating its 225th Anniversary with a public event on the courthouse lawn on Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday, September 18, 2019, Sevier County will celebrate its 225th anniversary with a ceremony, food, games for kids, and live music on the courthouse lawn from 6 – 9 p.m.

“We want to invite all Sevier Countians and visitors to celebrate this milestone and to honor the history of our great county,” said Mayor Larry Waters.

The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with a ceremony honoring the rich history of Sevier County. Retired Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court Gary Wade along with Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters and Sevier County Historian Carroll McMahan will be the keynote speakers. There will be tributes in song by the Sevier County High School Choir and special honors for the veterans from Sevier County who have served our country. In addition, the Sevier County Board of Commissioners will meet briefly in a Special Called Session to approve a joint resolution honoring the 225th anniversary of Sevier County.

Immediately following the ceremony, there will be food offerings for attendees, old-fashioned games for kids of all ages, historical items from Sevier County on display, and entertainment by Jimbo Whaley & Greenbrier.

“There will be something for everyone at the 225th Anniversary Celebration,” said Angela Atchley, Director of Tourism for Sevier County. “In addition to the food, games, and entertainment, we will have the courthouse decorated for the upcoming autumn and harvest festivals. What a great way to kick off our fall season. And best of all, the event is free and open to the public.”

Among the many historical items on display will be one of the original 1896 clockfaces from the historic Sevier County Courthouse clocktower where families may take pictures.

Traditionally on Wednesday, the old fire siren located in the bell tower sounds after the chiming of the bell at noon. In honor of the 225th anniversary, it will sound an extra minute marking the occasion. In addition, the historic 1896 bell atop the courthouse will chime a celebratory ring after the fire siren. The Sevier County 225th Anniversary Celebration is an event sponsored by the Sevier County Department of Tourism and Sevier County Mayor’s Office.

The courthouse is located at 125 Court Avenue in Sevierville.

The following roads will be closing at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night and reopening after the ceremony: Commerce St. and Court Avenue between Commerce St. and Bruce St. This is in addition to the roads closed due to construction downtown.
