Sevier County Man Faces Murder Charge in Shooting Death of Wife

The husband of a woman shot earlier this month has been charged in connection with her death.

Officers responded to a 911 call about 8 a.m. on August 2, 2010, from a residence on River Divide Road, reporting that a woman had been shot. Upon arrival they found 73-year-old Sue Ella Gibson suffering from a gunshot would. An ambulance transported her to LeConte Medical Center in Sevierville, where she was pronounced dead.

According to the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene and their investigation revealed that the victim’s husband 79-year-old Kenneth Gibson was at the home with his wife at the time, and that he retrieved a gun, and the victim was shot.

Gibson was detained at the scene and then sent to the hospital for evaluation, where he remained until taken into custody on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 upon release from the treatment facility. Gibson was charged with 2nd Degree Murder and booked into Sevier County Jail. He will be arraigned before a judge and a hearing will be set at a later date. The investigation is continuing.
